Notice of Motion - Area Committees

This Area Committee believes that real devolution can only be achieved if it is enabled to make serious decisions that impact on the lives of local people. In future its powers need to include planning decisions that were formerly the responsibility of District Council, local economic development and local transport issues. It calls on the Executive to ensure that such powers are firmly embedded in any plans submitted for devolution.

It further believes that Local Area Committees should serve logical geographical units and it should not be assumed that these will be the same as Parliamentary Constituencies. It must be for the elected members in the locality to decide on the logical geographical coverage of their Local Area Committees. The Local Area Committee for Skipton and Ripon is not convinced that it represents a coherent area of an appropriate physical size for local planning.
